Kapa’a, Kauai, Hawaii

Overview Kapa’a is part of Kauai County located on the eastern shoreof Kauai. The name Kapa’a is Hawaiian for “solid. ”Protestant missionaries and Euro-American settlers arrived in Kapa’a during the 19th century and quickly changed its economic landscape. Because of a boom in the island’s agriculture, developers and investors eventually built sugar cane and pineapple plantations in the area. Over time, many of them abandoned the plantations and took their business to more lucrative areas. Thankfully, this gave Kapa’a some much needed exposure which eventually paved the way for an influx of tourists and full time residents.   Attractions Known as one of Kauai’s best shopping destinations, Kapa’a has winding streets wand avenues lined with an exciting mix of trendy art galleries, boutiques, superb restaurants, cozy coffee shops, and plenty of bazaars and open markets. One such place is the Wailua Shopping Plaza, better known as the Coconut Marketplace – a sprawling outdoor bazaar bursting with plenty of great shopping finds. Originally established in 1952, the Coconut Marketplace has turned into the largest bazaar in Kauai, and is visited by tons of people from all over the world.  It is currently undergoing a major renovation. If you’d rather be awed by majestic scenery and natural surroundings, take a day trip to Nonou Mountain. Its name means “sleeping giant,” because of its resemblance to a giant lying on its back. Enjoy a scenic two-mile hike on the Nonou trail to get to the peak of the mountain, and prepare yourself for some absolutely jaw-dropping views of the Kauai landscape once you get to the top.
